Change Is Good…Love, Dad

When my wife and I got married (almost 18 years ago – best years of my life) my father gave us a small box. It was about the size of a brick and weighed about 20-30 pounds (approx. 10-12 KG).  When we arrived at our home that evening we opened it up and inside was about $200.00….in change! Quarters, dimes and nickels all neatly rolled. There was also a card that said:

“Change is good….Love, Dad”

Take a moment to think about that statement – “Change is Good”. It has meaning on several different levels:

Ø  On my wedding day it partly meant that the coins…the loose change…was good. We could deposit those coins into our bank account and use it to pay our rent  or use a hundred vending machines.

Ø  He  also meant that my transformation from being a single young man to a married man was also a good change. It is. I remain happily married to an amazing woman.

Ø  There is not a doubt in my mind that he was also telling me to always keep my options open. Look for positive changes that can be made to improve yourself and your life.

“Change is Good” is solid advice.  Many people are afraid of change. Please do not let that be you. Change is needed! What if your doctor graduated from medical school in 1970 and still practiced medicine exactly the same way? What if he never read a medical journal or listened to a medical conference? What if he never adapted? He would likely lose his license and be sued for medical malpractice. Change is essential in his field.

What if you purchased a brand new, state of the art computer in 1988 and NEVER upgraded it? It may have been a 486 processor running on MS-DOS. How useful do you think it would be? It would be absolutely useless. It would only be good as a museum piece or as garbage.  Change is essential.

How does this affect us? Don’t be afraid of change. If you want to start a home based business then just do it. If life is not what you need it to be then you need to change. “Change is Good”.

Dad passed away 5 years ago, but I still think of him often. He never met his grandchildren but I know he would appreciate that change in our life. I know that is what he meant. But that gift on my wedding night taught me a lot:

“Change is Good….Love, Dad”
